Japan Visa Fees Set to Rise 5x From July 1, Says Musafirbaba
Japan has announced a major visa fee hike effective July 1, with single-entry visa charges increasing fivefold. The move aims to support immigration administration and rising operational costs amid growing foreign arrivals.
Travelling to Japan may soon become more expensive for international visitors. The Japanese government has announced a major increase in visa fees starting July 1, marking the country's first visa fee revision in nearly five decades.
According to reports, the cost of a single-entry Japan visa will increase from ¥3,000 to ¥15,000, while a multiple-entry visa will rise from ¥6,000 to ¥30,000. The revised charges will apply to all visa applications submitted on or after July 1.
Japanese authorities said the existing visa fee structure had remained unchanged since 1978. The government believes the increase is necessary to account for inflation, rising administrative expenses, and changes in global exchange rates. Officials also stated that the fee revision is unlikely to affect inbound tourism in the short term.
The visa fee hike comes shortly after Japan approved new legislation allowing visa and residency-related charges to increase significantly. Under the revised framework, fees for residency status changes, visa extensions, and permanent residency applications could rise substantially over the coming months.
The Japanese government plans to use the additional revenue to improve immigration services, strengthen measures against illegal overstayers, and support Japanese-language education programmes for foreign residents. Japan's foreign resident population reached a record 4.13 million by the end of 2025, increasing pressure on immigration and administrative systems.
Officials have also pointed out that immigration-related fees in countries such as the United States and Germany are considerably higher than those currently charged in Japan. As the country continues to attract more tourists, workers, and long-term residents, the government says a stronger immigration administration system is needed.
Travellers planning a trip to Japan should factor the new visa costs into their travel budget and submit applications with the updated fee structure in mind.
