Japan Tourist Visa 2025: Documents, Process & Pro Tips for Quick Approval
The first time I thought about visiting Japan, I imagined myself standing under cherry blossoms in Kyoto, walking through the bustling streets of Tokyo and soaking in the calm of an onsen after a long day of travel. But before any of that dream could come true, there was one practical step that I had to tackle —getting a Japan Visa.
The entire procedure can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re applying for a Japan visa from India. However, in the recent years, the process has become a lot simpler than what we make it our heads. Our team at Musafir Baba has brought you a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the due process for Japan visa for Indian citizens. (I have also included some bonus tips that I wish someone had told me earlier).
Do Indian Citizens Need a Japan Visa Beforehand?

If you’re an Indian passport holder, you need a Japan visa before entering the country. Unlike some destinations that allow tourist visa on arrival, Japan requires prior approval. The good news is that the Japanese Embassy and Consulates in India have a clear process and approval rates for tourist Visa are generally high if your documents are in order.
What Type Of Japan Visa You Can Apply For?
Once you have set your mind to secure a visa for your Japan trip, next step is to choose the right visa category. If you’re traveling as a tourist, you’ll need the Short-Term Stay Visa, which allows you to stay for up to 90 days. This visa doesn’t allow work or paid activities but covers sightseeing, visiting friends or relatives and leisure trips.
In this blog, we’ll focus on the tourist visa. But in general, Japan Visa categories include:
Business Visa (for official work)
Transit Visa (if you’re just passing through)
Short-Term Stay Visa (for tourists and travelers)
Long-Term Visa (for study or employment)
How to Get Japan Visa in a Few Simple Steps?
1. Contact VFS Global centers
India has a Japanese Embassy in New Delhi as well as consulates in Mumbai, Chennai, Benagluru or Kolkata.
Visa applications to Japan must go through VFS Global centers across India. I remember feeling relieved because VFS made the process easier as they check your documents and forward everything to the embassy.
Submit your application at the nearest VFS Japan counter
Pay the visa fee
Wait for processing (In my case, I got my passport back with the visa stamp in less than a week.)
Prepare the Application Form
You can download the Japan visa online application form from the official Embassy website: https://www.in.emb-japan.go.jp/itprtop_en/index.html. Fill it carefully in capital letters. Make a checklist and collect all the required documents.
Japan Tourist Visa Requirements for Indian Citizens
As an Indian citizen, if you are applying for Japan Visa, you need a valid Passport with at least six months validity and two blank pages.
Along with your Visa Application Form, you want to keep recent passport-sized photographs and a cover letter explaining the purpose of your visit and travel dates.
If you’re visiting family or friends, you’ll also need an invitation letter and documents from your host. You would also need your bank statement for the last six months with sufficient funds to cover your expenses and income tax returns (ITR) for the last two years.
Apart from your visa documents, it is also a good idea to have a confirmed flight itinerary (preferably with a refundable ticket option) and book hotels in advance to avoid last-minute panic and overpriced tickets.
How much does Japan Visa Fee cost?
For Indian citizens, the Japan visa fee for a single-entry short-term stay is usually Rs 500–550. Multiple-entry visas cost a bit more. Besides, VFS charges are an additional service fee.
Bonus: Tips for Quick Approval
Last but not the least, here are a few tips to get a quick approval.
Double-check your documents as missing papers can cause a lot of delay in the Visa process.
It is important to maintain healthy bank balance as the embassy wants proof that you can fund your trip.
Besides, keep your itinerary realistic. For instance, 20 cities in seven days can look suspicious.
Ensure all your bookings are refundable, so that you don’t lose money even if plans change.
PS – Keep things truthful because the Japanese authorities are very strict about these things.
Why Getting a Japan Visa Is Worth It?
When I finally landed in Tokyo and felt the hum of Shibuya Crossing, all the paperwork felt like a tiny hurdle. While walking through Kyoto’s Fushimi Inari Shrine, I realised the Japan visa was my gateway not just to another country, but to a whole new world of experiences. So if you’re applying for a Japan visa from India in 2025, start early and enjoy a smooth journey.
