Locals like 27-year-old boatman Ram Lakhan Mallah, who ferries visitors between Guleria and Bhonsle ghats, credit these changes to coordinated development initiatives and community efforts to make the ghats more welcoming and hygienic. According to him, the improvements have not only elevated the city’s image for visitors but also increased daily income for many who depend on tourism.
The cleaner, better-managed waterfronts are part of a broader push to modernise Varanasi while preserving its unique spiritual heritage. Over the past few years, Varanasi has emerged as a global tourism powerhouse, with foreign tourist arrivals increasing dramatically and domestic visitors flocking to experience the city’s rituals, heritage, and cultural life.
These developments have also expanded economic prospects for local vendors, hospitality workers, and transport operators, all of whom benefit directly from the rising number of travellers. However, residents point out that rapid growth has brought challenges, including managing crowds, balancing tradition with modernisation, and ensuring that increased tourism does not strain the city’s infrastructure.
