The Indian government has revised passport application fees effective July 1, 2026, marking the first major increase in nearly 14 years. The new charges apply to fresh passports, renewals, Tatkal applications, Police Clearance Certificates, and replacement passports. Here's everything travellers need to know about the updated fee structure and how it may affect future international travel plans.

The Indian Government Increases Passport Application Fees From 1 July 2026, introducing the first major revision to passport charges in nearly 14 years. The revised fee structure, notified by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) through the Passports (Amendment) Rules, 2026, will apply to all passport applications submitted on or after July 1, 2026. The move affects fresh passport applications, renewals, Tatkal services, Police Clearance Certificates (PCC), and replacement passports issued due to loss or damage.

The revision comes as India continues to witness a sharp rise in international travel. More Indians are travelling abroad for tourism, higher education, employment, business, and medical treatment than ever before. With passport applications increasing every year, the government has updated the fee structure to support the expanding passport service network and the ongoing modernization of passport issuance across the country.

For most applicants, the biggest change is the cost of obtaining a standard 36-page passport. The fee for a fresh passport or reissue has increased from ₹1,500 to ₹2,500. Those opting for the Tatkal scheme, which offers faster processing for urgent travel, will now pay ₹5,000 instead of the previous ₹3,500. Applicants choosing a 60-page passport will also see higher charges, while fees for replacement passports, Police Clearance Certificates, Identity Certificates, and several miscellaneous passport services have also been revised.

Although the increase is significant, passport authorities point out that an ordinary passport remains valid for up to ten years for adults. When spread over a decade, the additional cost is relatively small compared to the convenience and security offered by one of the world's most widely accepted travel documents. However, families applying for multiple passports together, students preparing to study abroad, and travellers requiring urgent Tatkal processing are expected to feel the impact of the higher fees more immediately.

The revised charges have been introduced through the Passports (Amendment) Rules, 2026, which replace the earlier fee schedule under the Passports Rules, 1980. According to the official notification issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, every eligible application submitted from July 1, 2026, will be processed under the updated fee structure. Applications successfully submitted before the effective date will continue to be governed by the earlier charges.

Industry experts believe the revision reflects the government's continued investment in strengthening passport infrastructure. Over the past decade, passport services have become increasingly digital through the Passport Seva system, online appointment booking, expanded Passport Seva Kendras, improved verification processes, and the gradual rollout of e-Passports. These upgrades have significantly reduced processing times and improved accessibility for applicants across India.

The announcement also comes at a time when outbound tourism from India is growing rapidly. Popular international destinations such as Thailand, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and several European countries are actively promoting travel among Indian tourists. As more Indians apply for passports to explore international destinations, the updated fee structure is expected to generate additional resources for maintaining efficient passport services while supporting future technological improvements.

Travel professionals recommend that anyone planning an overseas holiday, educational program, or business trip should ensure that their passport remains valid well in advance of travel. Many countries require passports to have at least six months of validity beyond the intended date of arrival. Delaying renewal could result in additional expenses, especially if urgent Tatkal processing becomes necessary after the revised charges take effect.

Travel companies are also advising customers to complete passport-related formalities as early as possible before beginning visa applications. According to travel experts at MusafirBaba, keeping travel documents updated well before booking an international trip can help travellers avoid unnecessary delays and last-minute complications during the visa application process.

For applicants who have been planning to obtain a passport, the revised fee structure serves as an important reminder to review their travel plans carefully. Whether applying for a fresh passport, renewing an existing one, or requesting a replacement document, applicants should verify the applicable charges before submitting their application through the official Passport Seva system.

Despite the increase in passport application fees, industry observers do not expect the revision to slow India's growing appetite for international travel. Rising incomes, improved air connectivity, easier visa policies, and expanding travel opportunities continue to encourage millions of Indians to explore destinations around the world. The passport remains one of the most essential documents for international mobility, and demand is expected to remain strong in the years ahead.

With the new fee schedule becoming effective from 1 July 2026, prospective applicants are encouraged to stay informed about the revised charges and complete their passport applications through the official government channels to ensure a smooth and hassle-free process.
