The Indian tourism rankings for 2024-2025 from the Ministry of Tourism show one clear trend. Indians are travelling inside the country more than ever, and a few states pull a huge share of that traffic. In 2024, people took 2,948.19 million domestic trips across India, which marks a rise of 17.51% over 2023.

How Big Is The Travel Boom

Tourism within India kept growing from 2011 to 2019 at a compound rate of 9.89% a year. COVID broke that run in 2020, when movement dropped due to curbs. The bounce back came fast once routes opened again. Growth touched 11.05% in 2021, then shot up to 155.45% in 2022 and 45.04% in 2023, before settling at 17.51% in 2024 on a much larger base.

Five states alone drew 60.38% of all domestic trips in 2024. That tight spread shows how much weight the top-most visited indian states carry in India’s wider travel economy.

North Vs South: Where Indians Travel More

Three northern states, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh, together saw 894.93 million domestic visitors in 2024. They also hosted about 2.27 million foreign tourists in the same year.

In the south, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh as a group, did even better for local traffic. They logged 901.67 million domestic visits, which means over 30% of all trips inside India went to just these three states.

Some smaller regions raced ahead on growth. Chandigarh’s domestic visits jumped by about 173%. Andaman and Nicobar Islands rose by around 120%, while Mizoram grew by about 102%.

These shifts are at the heart of India’s travel trends, as more people add short breaks, long weekends, and work trips to their year.

Together, these ten shape how hotels, airlines, and state bodies plan future routes and services. Analysts use this map of the most visited Indian states to read how people move and where new capacity will pay off first.

What The Rankings Signal For 2025

The pattern in Indian tourism suggests that the same heavyweights will likely remain among the most visited Indian states in 2026 too, unless another state posts very high growth. Rising numbers also align with a broader story of domestic tourism growth in India, as more citizens choose local trips over faraway holidays.

For travellers, these rankings act like a quick heat map of demand. For states, they are a clear signal to improve crowd control, protect key heritage sites, and keep public places clean so that the next list of most visited Indian states does not just show higher counts, but also better on-the-ground experiences.
