India Ranked 125th in Global Passport Index 2026: Full Report

The Global Passport Index 2026 has revealed a fresh picture of how the world's passports compare, and Europe continues to dominate the rankings. Nine of the world's ten strongest passports now belong to European countries, with Sweden securing the top position. The report evaluates not only travel freedom but also how valuable a passport is for living, working and investing abroad.

Unlike traditional passport rankings that focus mainly on visa-free access, the Global Passport Index uses a broader approach. It considers three major pillars: global mobility, investment opportunities and quality of life. Together, these factors provide a more complete view of the benefits attached to holding a particular passport.

Sweden claimed the number one spot thanks to its strong performance across all categories. Switzerland, Finland and Germany followed closely behind, while the Netherlands and Denmark shared fifth place. Ireland, the United Kingdom, Norway and Singapore completed the top ten, making Singapore the only non-European country to feature among the world's strongest passports.

The ranking is published by Global Citizen Solutions and is based on data collected from internationally recognised organisations, including the World Bank, the World Economic Forum and the Sustainable Development Report. Instead of measuring only visa-free destinations, the index assigns 50 per cent weight to mobility and 25 per cent each to investment and quality of living.

For India, the latest report presents a mixed picture. The Indian passport is ranked 125th among 200 countries, placing it well behind many developed nations. India's mobility ranking remains around 135th, while its quality-of-life score stands slightly better at 118th. The findings suggest that several countries have expanded international travel access more rapidly in recent years.

The latest ranking also comes shortly after India's position declined in another well-known global passport study. In the July 2026 Henley Passport Index, India slipped to 80th place, with Indian passport holders enjoying visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 56 destinations. Popular countries including the United States, the United Kingdom and most European nations still require Indian travellers to obtain visas before departure.

For Indian travellers planning overseas holidays or business trips, passport rankings offer useful insight but should not be the only factor influencing travel plans. Visa policies continue to change, and travellers should always check the latest entry requirements before booking. For example, many visitors still need a Singapore visa depending on their nationality and travel purpose, while several other destinations maintain advance visa requirements despite improvements in global mobility.
