India has introduced digital e-OCI Cards for all new applicants from July 8, 2026, replacing physical OCI booklet issuance. Existing cardholders can continue using their physical cards or download the digital version. The updated rules also simplify renewals and limit personal interviews to spouse-based OCI applications, making the OCI process faster and more convenient for overseas Indians.

The Government of India has introduced a major change to the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) programme by launching digital e-OCI Cards for all new applicants from July 8, 2026. The move is aimed at making the OCI system faster, paperless, and more convenient for overseas Indians.

Under the new rules announced by the Bureau of Immigration (BOI), new OCI applicants will receive only a digital e-OCI Card, while existing physical OCI booklets will continue to remain valid. However, cardholders will no longer be required to carry the physical booklet while travelling.

Digital e-OCI Cards Now Mandatory for New Applicants

From July 8 onwards, anyone applying for an OCI Card will receive a digital e-OCI Card instead of the traditional booklet. Once the application is approved, the card can be downloaded directly to a mobile phone and presented along with a valid passport at Immigration Check Posts and with participating airlines.

The government says this change is part of its efforts to digitise immigration services and make international travel easier for OCI cardholders.

Existing Physical OCI Booklets Will Remain Valid

People who already hold an OCI Card do not need to replace their existing physical booklet.

Current OCI cardholders can continue using their physical booklet if they prefer. They can also download the new digital e-OCI Card and use it for travel. Carrying the physical OCI booklet is now optional, provided the traveller has the digital card and passport.

Personal Interviews Limited to Spouse-Based OCI Applications

The government has also simplified the OCI application process.

Under the revised guidelines, personal interviews will now be required only for applicants applying for OCI registration based on marriage under Section 7A(1)(d) of the Citizenship Act, 1955.

For all other OCI applicants, there will be no mandatory personal interview, reducing processing time and making the application process more convenient.

OCI Card Renewal Rules Relaxed

Another important change benefits existing OCI cardholders.

Earlier, OCI holders were required to renew or reissue their cards after obtaining a new passport at certain ages or after updating personal details.

Under the new system:

  • OCI cards do not need to be renewed after getting a new passport at the age of 20 or 50.

  • Changes such as name, nationality, gender, or passport details can now be updated online.

  • Cardholders only need to update their information through the official OCI portal instead of applying for a fresh card.

This is expected to reduce paperwork and simplify compliance for millions of OCI cardholders worldwide.

How to Access the Digital e-OCI Card

New applicants and existing OCI holders can access OCI-related services through the official OCI Services Portal.

After approval, the digital e-OCI Card can be downloaded to a smartphone and presented whenever required during international travel.

What This Means for Travellers

The introduction of digital e-OCI Cards marks another step towards India's digital governance initiative. Overseas Indians can now expect a simpler application process, fewer renewal requirements, and easier access to their OCI documents while travelling.

Travellers planning to visit India should ensure they download their digital e-OCI Card before departure and keep it available on their mobile device along with a valid passport.
