Uttarakhand authorities have issued a monsoon advisory for Char Dham Yatra pilgrims amid rising footfall at Kedarnath and other shrines. Devotees have been urged to stay alert for heavy rainfall, landslides and travel disruptions. Officials have strengthened safety measures and advised pilgrims to follow weather updates and official guidelines throughout the journey.

Dehradun: As the Char Dham Yatra continues to attract thousands of devotees from across the country, Uttarakhand authorities have issued a monsoon advisory warning pilgrims about possible weather-related disruptions during their journey to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri.

The warning comes amid a sharp rise in pilgrim numbers this year, with Kedarnath and Badrinath witnessing heavy footfall since the start of the yatra season. Officials have expressed concern that the arrival of the southwest monsoon could increase the risk of landslides, flash floods, road blockages and other weather-related challenges in the Himalayan region.

According to officials, safety arrangements have been strengthened across the Char Dham routes as authorities prepare for the expected increase in rainfall over the coming weeks. Pilgrims have been advised to monitor weather updates regularly and avoid travelling during periods of heavy rain.

The Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee, the Uttarakhand Disaster Management Authority and the State Tourism Department have jointly appealed to devotees to exercise caution during their pilgrimage. Authorities said that while the state is witnessing a successful yatra season, the safety of pilgrims remains the highest priority.

Officials have urged travellers to carry essential items such as raincoats, warm clothing, sturdy trekking shoes, torches and personal medicines. Pilgrims have also been advised to keep emergency contact numbers accessible and download offline maps in case of network disruptions in remote areas.

Kedarnath, situated at an altitude of approximately 3,583 metres, remains particularly vulnerable to sudden weather changes during the monsoon season. Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, hailstorms and reduced visibility can affect both trekking and helicopter operations. The 16-kilometre trek from Gaurikund is expected to become more challenging during periods of continuous rainfall due to slippery conditions on the route.

Recent spells of rain have already caused temporary disruptions in some areas, leading to delays in helicopter services and precautionary restrictions on movement along certain sections of the Kedarnath yatra route. Authorities are closely monitoring weather developments and have placed emergency response teams on standby.

To manage the growing number of pilgrims, the state administration has implemented several measures, including traffic regulation on major routes, enhanced medical facilities at base camps and increased deployment of rescue personnel from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

Registration for Char Dham Yatra continues to remain mandatory. Officials have appealed to devotees to complete registrations in advance and follow designated travel schedules to help reduce overcrowding at key locations.

The state government has also intensified efforts to promote environmentally responsible tourism during the pilgrimage season. Waste management initiatives and awareness campaigns are being conducted along the yatra routes to minimise environmental impact and protect the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.

Meanwhile, district administrations in Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi and Tehri have been directed to maintain a high level of preparedness throughout the monsoon period. Road maintenance teams, disaster response units and local authorities have been instructed to respond quickly to any weather-related incidents.

Officials have appealed to pilgrims to remain patient, follow safety instructions issued by authorities and avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather conditions. They said timely planning and cooperation from devotees would play an important role in ensuring a safe and smooth Char Dham Yatra during the monsoon season.
