Spring arrives in Kashmir as Asia’s largest tulip garden opens in Srinagar on 16 March. With nearly 1.8 million tulips blooming against the backdrop of Dal Lake, the garden is expected to draw travellers from across the world.

Every year, the arrival of spring in Kashmir is announced not by a calendar date but by colour. Across the foothills overlooking the valley, rows of tulips begin to bloom, painting the landscape in bright shades of red, yellow, pink and violet. This year, that seasonal spectacle officially begins on 16 March as the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar opens its gates to visitors for the 2026 season.

Situated on the foothills of the Zabarwan Range and overlooking the serene waters of Dal Lake, the garden has grown into one of the most celebrated spring attractions in India. As Asia’s largest tulip garden, it signals the beginning of the valley’s tourism season and draws travellers from across the country and around the world who arrive eager to witness the brief but breathtaking bloom.

This year’s opening promises an even more vibrant display than before. Officials from the Floriculture Department have confirmed that nearly 1.8 million tulip bulbs have been planted across the terraced garden, showcasing more than 70 different varieties of tulips. The flower beds have been arranged with increased density to create a richer and more colourful visual landscape for visitors walking through the pathways.

The garden itself carries an interesting history. Originally known as Siraj Bagh, it was later renamed the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden and opened to the public in 2008 with the aim of boosting tourism during the transition from winter to summer in the valley. Over the years, the attraction has expanded significantly, both in terms of size and popularity. What once began with a relatively modest number of tulip bulbs has grown into a massive floral landscape spread across the slopes beneath the Zabarwan mountains.

Walking through the garden during peak bloom feels like stepping into a living painting. Carefully planted rows of tulips create striking bands of colour across the hillside, while the snow-touched peaks of Kashmir and the calm surface of Dal Lake form a dramatic backdrop. The combination of alpine scenery and vibrant flowers is precisely what makes this destination one of the most photographed spring locations in India.

Beyond tulips, the garden also showcases other spring flowers such as daffodils and hyacinths, adding additional layers of colour to the already vivid display. These seasonal blooms typically remain at their peak for around three to four weeks, making the window for visitors relatively short but incredibly rewarding.

For Kashmir’s tourism sector, the opening of the tulip garden is more than just a seasonal event. It marks the beginning of a renewed flow of travellers into the valley. Hotels, houseboats and local travel services usually see a noticeable rise in bookings during this period as travellers combine the tulip experience with visits to iconic destinations such as Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg.

The garden has also been witnessing steadily rising visitor numbers over the past few years. During the previous season alone, it attracted more than eight lakh visitors within just one month, highlighting the growing popularity of spring travel in Kashmir.

Authorities expect a similar or even larger turnout this year as domestic tourism continues to surge. With improved visitor facilities, designated photography points and enhanced landscaping, the garden aims to offer an even better experience for tourists exploring the valley during spring.

For travellers planning a visit, the timing is particularly important. The tulip bloom gradually unfolds through March and reaches its peak towards the end of the month or early April depending on weather conditions. Because the flowering season lasts only a few weeks, many travellers carefully schedule their Kashmir trips around this short window to experience the valley at its most colourful.

The reopening of the garden also reflects the changing mood of the valley as winter finally loosens its grip. Almond blossoms begin appearing across parts of Srinagar, mountain snow slowly retreats and the valley begins to fill with the colours and scents of spring. Together, these signs of seasonal change transform Kashmir into one of the most enchanting travel destinations in the region during March and April.

As the gates open once again on 16 March, the tulip garden is expected to become the centrepiece of Kashmir’s spring tourism. For travellers seeking scenic landscapes, vibrant floral displays and the charm of the Himalayas emerging from winter, the coming weeks in Srinagar promise a truly unforgettable spectacle.
