About This Tour
Nestled high in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, Kedarnath stands as one of the most revered pilgrimage destinations in India. Perched at an altitude of approximately 3,583 meters (11,755 feet), this sacred town is home to the ancient Shri Kedarnath Temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and a vital part of the Char Dham Yatra. Kedarnath yatra by helicopter is a part of the Chardham Yatra comprising Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath.
Surrounded by snow-clad peaks, glacial rivers, and raw Himalayan wilderness, Kedarnath is not just a destination - it is a profound spiritual experience that blends faith, endurance, and divine serenity.
Kedarnath holds immense importance in Hindu mythology and is deeply associated with the Mahabharata. According to legend, the Pandavas sought forgiveness from Lord Shiva after the Kurukshetra war. Shiva, unwilling to meet them, transformed into a bull and disappeared into the ground at Kedarnath, leaving behind his hump. The temple is believed to be built on this sacred spot, making it one of the most powerful Shaivite shrines in India.
The current stone structure of the temple is believed to have been constructed by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. Remarkably, the temple has withstood centuries of extreme weather and even the devastating 2013 floods, reinforcing the faith of millions who consider Kedarnath a symbol of divine protection and resilience.
Set against the majestic backdrop of the Kedarnath Range, the region is dominated by towering Himalayan peaks such as Kedarnath Peak, Bharatekuntha, and Kedar Dome. The holy Mandakini River, originating from the Chorabari Glacier, flows gracefully near the temple, adding to the sacred aura of the valley.
The natural surroundings of Kedarnath are untouched and awe-inspiring—glaciers, alpine meadows, dramatic valleys, and pristine mountain air create an atmosphere that feels both humbling and uplifting. During early mornings and evenings, when clouds drift across the mountains and temple bells echo through the valley, the entire landscape feels deeply meditative.
The Kedarnath Temple is built from massive stone slabs over a large rectangular platform. Inside the sanctum lies the conical rock formation worshipped as the Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva. Daily rituals such as Mahabhishek, Rudrabhishek, and evening aartis attract pilgrims from across the country.
Due to its high altitude and harsh climate, the temple remains open only for a limited period each year—generally from April/May to October/November, depending on weather conditions. During winter, the deity is ceremonially shifted to Ukshimath, where worship continues.
Traditionally, reaching Kedarnath required a challenging trek from Gaurikund, making the journey physically demanding. However, modern infrastructure and helicopter services from nearby helipads such as Phata, Sersi, Guptkashi, and premium charter options via Dehradun have made Kedarnath accessible to senior citizens, families, and time-bound pilgrims without compromising the sanctity of the journey.
Despite these conveniences, Kedarnath retains its spiritual depth, offering pilgrims the rare opportunity to connect with faith amidst nature’s raw power.
The best time to visit Kedarnath is between May and June and September to early October. These months offer relatively stable weather and clear mountain views. The monsoon season (July–August) is generally avoided due to landslides and operational disruptions, while winters bring heavy snowfall, rendering the region inaccessible.
Kedarnath is not merely a temple visit—it is a journey of self-reflection, surrender, and spiritual awakening. The silence of the mountains, the disciplined rhythm of temple rituals, and the sheer scale of the Himalayas remind visitors of their place in the universe. Whether you visit as a devotee, a seeker, or a traveler drawn to sacred landscapes, Kedarnath leaves a lasting imprint on the soul.
