7 Common Mistakes You Don’t Want to Commit to Avoid Singapore Visa Rejection

The first time I planned my trip to Singapore, I was already daydreaming about the city  Gardens by the Bay, Sentosa and the incredible food stalls at Maxwell Hawker Centre. I had even shortlisted a few Singapore tour packages from Mumbai and looked up potential jobs in Singapore for Indians, in case I wanted to extend my stay.

But before I could pack my bags, my plans went for a toss. My Singapore visa application was rejected. I eventually made it through and had the most beautiful trip; but I want you to avoid the hassle and skip to the good part.

For most Indian travellers, getting a Singapore visa is quite a smooth process, if all documents are in order. But, many small and avoidable mistakes can lead to rejections.

If you want to make sure your application is approved on the first go, here is a list of mistakes to avoid.

7 most common mistakes to avoid when applying for a Singapore visa:

1. Submitting the Wrong Singapore Visa Photo Size

It might sound trivial, but one of the most common reasons for Singapore visa rejection is an incorrect photo. The Singapore High Commission has very specific requirements:

  • Dimensions must be 35mm wide x 45mm high

  • White background with no shadows

  • Face should cover 70–80% of the photo

  • Neutral expression

  • No glasses with reflections and no headgear (unless worn daily for religious reasons)

During my first application, I casually used a passport photo I already had at home. Later, I had to get new photos clicked.

2. Incomplete or Incorrect Documents

Visa officers need to be sure that your intentions are genuine. Submitting incomplete forms, missing signatures or incorrect details are a straight ticket to rejection. For example, many people forget to include their cover letter. It is a simple document, in which you explain your purpose of visit, similar to a Schengen visa cover letter.

Here’s a quick checklist of documents for getting a Singapore visa from India:

  • A valid passport with validity of at least 6 months and 2 blank pages

  • A completed visa application form (Form 14A)

  • Photographs as per the Singapore visa photo size

  • Confirmed return flight tickets

  • Hotel bookings or accommodation proof

  • Bank statements

  • Cover letter stating the purpose of visit and travel itinerary

3. Insufficient Proof of Financial Stability

When I applied, one of the first things the consulate checked was my bank balance. The Singapore authorities want to ensure you can fund your own trip without financial strain. If your account shows low or irregular funds, it raises red flags.

Ideally, you should maintain a healthy bank balance for at least three to six months before applying. This is especially important if you’re considering jobs in Singapore for Indians.

4. Applying Through the Wrong Channel

As an Indian citizen, you cannot apply for a Singapore tourist visa directly online. Applications must go through authorised agents or partners approved by the Singapore High Commission.

When I first researched the process, I almost sent my documents to the wrong portal. Thankfully, a friend warned me. It is advised to apply through the official VFS centres or recognised travel agents. If you’re booking Singapore tour packages from Mumbai, most operators will happily assist with the visa process too.

5. Unrealistic Travel Itinerary

A vague or overly ambitious itinerary can hurt your chances. For instance, you can’t expect them to believe you will visit 15 attractions in just 2 days. It simply looks impractical, and visa officers might question your intentions.

For reference, my itinerary covered Marina Bay Sands, Sentosa Island and Chinatown in four days. This not only made my application look genuine but also gave the officer confidence that I had planned responsibly.

You also need to factor in the best time to visit Singapore. Weather and festivals matter. For example, applying during the Chinese New Year may raise additional scrutiny if accommodation bookings look vague.

6. Ignoring Employment Details

For many Indians, Singapore is not just a tourist destination but also a hub of opportunities. But, if you are applying for a tourist visa, you must be careful to not confuse it with a work permit. Stating “looking for jobs in Singapore for Indians” under purpose of visit is a guaranteed rejection for a tourist visa application.

If you’re genuinely going for tourism, your cover letter and documents should reflect that. On the other hand, if you’re applying for a work visa, follow the correct employment visa procedure.

7. Providing False or Misleading Information

Providing false or misleading information will not only lead to Singapore visa rejection, but can have long-term consequences. Whether it’s about your travel history, financial status or purpose of visit, honesty is non-negotiable.

You can be blacklisted for submitting fake bank statements or doctored employment records. Not only does this ruin your Singapore travel dreams, but will also affect your  application for other countries in the future.

What To Do If Your Singapore Visa Gets Rejected?

Firstly, breathe and don’t panic! Don’t fall into the trap of suspicious travel agencies. A rejection doesn’t mean you cannot enter Singapore. Carefully read the rejection reason stated by the consulate. Fix the error — whether it’s updating your Singapore visa photo size, improving financial documents or submitting a clearer travel itinerary — and reapply.

A rejected visa can feel disheartening, but it’s often just a reminder to prepare better. Patience and attention to detail go a long way. Avoiding these seven mistakes will save you time, money and unnecessary stress.

Finally, when you hold your approved Singapore visa in your hand, it will all be worth it. From the light shows at Marina Bay to strolling along Orchard Road, Singapore is worth every second and every single penny you’ll invest in planning the trip.

If you’re still on the fence, let this be your sign. Book that ticket, browse through Singapore tour packages from Mumbai, and let MusafirBaba be your travel buddy.
