Amrit Bharat Express Services Launched in Kerala to Improve Connectivity
In a transformative step for rail travel in South India, three Amrit Bharat Express trains were inaugurated in Kerala to enhance regional connectivity, support tourism, trade and everyday travel, while offering reliable and affordable train services for all.
In a momentous development that captured the attention of travellers and daily commuters alike, Indian Railways has embarked on a mission to transform rail connectivity in the southern part of the country. On January 23, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated a new suite of Amrit Bharat Express trains from Thiruvananthapuram, marking the first time such services are introduced in Kerala. This rollout is part of a broader expansion aimed at providing dependable, affordable and enhanced rail travel for millions of passengers across the region.
The ceremony held at Putharikandam Maidan in Kerala’s capital underscored the national railways’ commitment to delivering efficient passenger services that marry comfort with accessibility. Coinciding with this announcement was the launch of a new passenger train service between Thrissur and Guruvayur, designed to serve short-distance commuters, students, pilgrims and local travellers with daily mobility options.
The newly introduced Amrit Bharat Express trains are shaping up as a connective thread that binds major economic, educational, cultural and pilgrimage hubs across southern India. Tailored to bridge the gap between traditional mail/express services and premium trains, these services offer upgraded coach interiors, improved safety systems, reliable information systems and onboard catering all while maintaining fare structures that are accessible for everyday travellers.
Among the new services, the Thiruvananthapuram Central–Tambaram Amrit Bharat Express stands out, linking Kerala’s southern capital with key Tamil Nadu cities such as Tirunelveli and Madurai, continuing to Tiruchchirappalli and finally Tambaram. A second crucial link is the Thiruvananthapuram North–Charlapalli Amrit Bharat Express, which strengthens the railway corridor between Kerala and Telangana, pausing at notable junctions in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Additionally, the Nagercoil–Mangaluru Amrit Bharat Express connects the southernmost parts of Tamil Nadu with coastal Karnataka via Kerala’s rail network, fostering seamless travel along the western sea belt.
The introduction of these railway services arrives at a pivotal moment for tourism, regional trade, cultural exchange, and economic activity. With the trains operating on a weekly basis, passengers now have more dependable options for long-distance travel, while daily commuters benefit from improved route coverage and enhanced travel experience. While these trains are not high-speed services, they prioritise comfort, punctuality and service reliability, which are crucial for the common passenger. Food services are provided through onboard catering or pantry cars, offering a welcome convenience for longer journeys.
This initiative also supports Kerala’s broader tourism narrative, opening up more accessible corridors to iconic destinations and pilgrimage sites. Whether it is families planning holiday journeys, students heading across states for education, or business travellers seeking efficient transport links, the impact of these services is already resonating across the rail-dependent population.
As Indian Railways continues its expansion with plans to introduce even more Amrit Bharat services across the country, this Kerala launch sets a promising precedent for regional connectivity that future travellers will benefit from.
